Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The grass is mowed, the team is ready and the game is already sold out. It's the 2012 home opener for the F-M Redhawks, and Newman Outdoor Field definitely has some noticeable changes this year. Fans are definitely in for a treat this year.
Eric Jorgenson – Redhawks Promotional Director: “The Bottom's Up is what's called. Actually, there's a magnet on the bottom of the cup and when you put it on there. It fills all the way and stops right at the top.
It will be one of the most popular new items at Newman. The record is 56 beers in 60 seconds. The beer line is sure to be much shorter in 2012.
For those hoping to activate a different kind of taste-bud, a new smoker for ribs sits on the third base concourse.
Eric Jorgenson: “Making the stadium smell good like a ball park.”
In left-center, the most obvious addition is a brand new, $400,000 scoreboard. Below, the grounds crew has made all its finishing touches, making sure what's fair is fair and what's foul is foul.
Sam Petersen – Head Groundskeeper: “Just making sure the field is playable, in good condition and looking nice for the game.”
The home opener is a week later than usual, but finally it's time to play ball.
Eric Jorgenson: “It's about the right time of the year for us to do it. We'd like to do it this time of the year, the weather is a little nicer.”
Sam Petersen: “We're ready to get going because we've been working hard. Excited to see a new team and get all the fans in again.”
With all the construction, getting to Newman can get a little tricky. Team officials suggest coming and going via 12th Avenue or 19th Avenue North and 25th street or I-29. As many of you have probably noticed, University Drive and 10th street can be quite the nightmare with all the closures.
