NEW ULM, Minn. (AP) — Heavy thunderstorms dropped anywhere from three to six inches of rain in many parts of the state — forcing some roads to close, and flooding some basements.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation closed Highway 61 west of Grand Marais to all vehicles but semitrailers on Thursday night, due to flooding in the area. The road will be closed until further notice.

Earlier in the day, a mudslide along westbound Interstate 694 in Arden Hills restricted travel to one lane at the peak of the morning rush.

KSTP-TV reported that many people in the St. Michael area were sopping up water from their basements after the heavy rain.
