Veterans gather in Fargo for reunion of USS Block Island

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Dozens of World War Two veterans from around the country are gathering in Fargo this week for the reunion of the USS Block Island.

Dozens of World War Two veterans from around the country are gathering in Fargo this week for the reunion of the USS Block Island. 72 veterans attended the initial social and buffet at the Kelly Inn of Fargo. The reunion is being hosted by the local chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America.

The USS Block had a part in the sinking of four German submarines, but was eventually hit by three German torpedoes on, May 29th, 1944. All but six crew members survived.

J. Peter Dosland – USS Block Island Vet, Fargo: “It was fun; it was an experience I am very glad that I had. I met a lot of wonderful people.”

George Shepke – USS Block Island Vet, Fargo: “I've been going to it for the last 20-some years, and I'll go to it until I can't go anymore.”

Events this week include a trip to the Hjemkomst Center and Fargo Air Museum, as well as a Red Hawks game.
