Debra Eull – Found Mystery Good: "They are little jelly blobs"
Debra Eull and her husband woke up and were getting going on a Saturday at their house near Dent, Minnesota.
Debra Eull: “My husband and me were having coffee at the table, and it had just rained. He happened to look out and saw what looked like hail, it wasn't very many of them and he walked out and it was a jelly substance. They were here after a rain I have to assume they came out of the sky.”
So just what could be this dippity doo like substance be?
Jeff Bodwin – MSUM Chemistry Professor: “I would say looking at it and feeling it, it probably just a water retention gel of some sort; a silicone polymer, maybe some other type of polymer that just absorbs and traps a lot of water.”
Debra's freshly planted garden is likely the source. Bodwin thinks that the gel was in her potted plants to absorb water. They likely spilled out on to the patio and the rain on Friday night likely made them get bigger. Greenhouse owners confirmed that this is a kind of substance they use in some potted plants.
So no new atmospheric phenomenon is discovered today, but just something you might bring home for the garden. Just to be safe the chemistry department at MSUM did take a sample to analyze.
