Tornado's chaos weighs heavily on kids

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Students at a north Minneapolis elementary school who experienced the destruction, even death, from the tornado that touched down in north Minneapolis a year ago are dealing with the memories of the chaos the storm produced.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Students at a north Minneapolis elementary school who experienced the destruction, even death, from the tornado that touched down in north Minneapolis a year ago are dealing with the memories of the chaos the storm produced.

Lucy Craft Laney Elementary School students are working through anxieties by re-enacting the tornado. In art class, students draw their recollections of the tornado and its destruction. Their drawings will be incorporated into a school mural.

Principal David Branch says he wants to help student tap into their sense of resilience. Branch points out that the economically-depressed area has weathered the crack cocaine epidemic to a wave of home foreclosures. He says the community tends to bounce back.

Minnesota Public Radio News (http://bit.ly/LaOrfe ) says Tuesday, the anniversary, students will attend a ceremony outside, then release hundreds of balloons.
