National Guard troops hunt for the best bridge location on the Missouri

Bismarck, ND (WDAY TV) -- North Dakota's National Guard troops are roughing it this weekend, practicing rafting and bridging techniques on the Missouri.

It's a muddy ride for the 957th Engineer Company, as members hunt for the best place to put up a bridge over the water.

During a flood, the bridge would be used to move military equipment. The company usually practices on the Missouri, but last year, the water was too high.

That flood forced changes in the river, and those changes are now a new learning tool for the company.

Ryan Kaufman, the 957th Company Commander, says, "This whole area that we're on right now was completely under water last year as you know with the flood, so trees have blocked roads, we've had to move some trees out of the way, the river channel has changed, sandbars have changed."

Nearly 150 troops are practicing in Bismarck this weekend.
