Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- The 8th year of the Fargo Marathon is in the books! And today was one of the craziest in the events' history.
A wrong turn by the motorcade cost the leader the title in the 10-K. And in the half marathon, a finish line debacle that was even stranger.
This is what the finish line of the half marathon SHOULD look like, separate chutes for the 10-K and the half.
But it was utter chaos as the top two half-marathoners approached the finish--First, a van cuts across, then 10-K participants are in BOTH chutes. Fargo native Andrew Carlson was leading Joe Moore as both guys came down the tunnel, into the dome. Both guys in a dead sprint. Carlson thinks he has it won, but then he's slowed by 10-K traffic, allowing Moore to fly by and win!..Carlson can't believe it. But it's Moore, the winner of the half in a P-R of 1 hour, 4 minutes, and 38 seconds.
Andrew Carlson says, "very embarrassing finish for me to have it end the way it did, to think I had it won and then lose it, I've seen that happen before on TV, and said I'll never do that. Then it happened. "
Joe Moore/Half Marathon Champ says, "Think it was bad luck on his part. Really, I want to talk to him and feel bad because there were people all over. I feel really bad because at the finish, he knew he had it and I saw him and said, crap I'm going fast and am gonna pass him and that really sucks."
Carlson says, "Regardless of what happened the last 50 meters, there was 13.1 miles for me to win that race and I just never did."
