WINONA, Minn. (AP) — A Winona man is missing after he fell off a boat into the Mississippi River.

Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand says two men were boating about 4 p.m. Thursday when one fell into the river.

The 57-year-old man was not wearing a life vest. The other man threw one to him but he couldn't reach it.

The search continued until it grew dark about 8:30 p.m. Searchers planned to go out again at 7 a.m. Friday.

The Winona Daily News (http://bit.ly/JNOkZr) reports the Mayo One helicopter scanned miles of river and shoreline for hours, but found nothing.

Law enforcement planned to ask operators to temporarily close Lock and Dam 6 near Trempealeau, Wis.
