Berg leads Sand, Heitkamp in Forum Communications Senate Poll

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - There will be a Republican showdown at the polls in June.

There will be a Republican showdown at the polls in June. Two men are vying to become the Republican U.S. Senate nominee against Democrat Heidi Heitkamp. Our Forum Communications Company exclusive polling on the June election predicts a winner and looks ahead to November.

Will it be Heidi Heitkamp facing Representative Rick Berg in the fall? Or Duane Sand? In our random sampling of 500 likely June primary voters, Rick Berg outdistances Sand by 65 % to 21% with 14% undecided.

That means the first term congressman & party endorsed candidate would become the Republican nominee against Democrat Heitkamp in the November general election. That election will decide who takes the seat being vacated by retiring Senator Kent Conrad, first elected to the senate in 1986.

Our poll, conducted by Essman Research out of Iowa, looks ahead to the fall race. If Sand, making his 4th run at congress, pulls out a primary upset, it would set up a tight contest, with Heitkamp, the former attorney general, holding a slight edge over Navy commander Sand.

If she is pitted against Berg, 51% of likely voters would pick him to become our next senator. Find complete analysis to the poll in the latest Forum and Herald.
