ND crew camps bane for some, salve for others

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Some communities in western North Dakota have placed moratoriums on so-called "man camps," but others see them as a temporary salve to handle the onslaught of workers who have descended on the state's oil patch.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Some communities in western North Dakota have placed moratoriums on so-called "man camps," but others see them as a temporary salve to handle the onslaught of workers who have descended on the state's oil patch.

Willliams, Mountrail and Dunn counties declared moratoriums on man camps last year, saying the influx of new workers has placed a strain on services and infrastructure.

Dunn County lifted its moratorium on Wednesday. Commissioner Tim Steffen says another 600 beds will be allowed.

Dickinson's planning and zoning commission on Wednesday approved a 3,000-unit facility in an industrial area near the city's waste water treatment plant.

City Commissioner Klayton Oltmanns says the facility is needed to ease the housing crunch.
