Rothsay community comes together to help boy stricken with cancer

Rothsay, MN (WDAY TV) - In a show of tremendous support, the community of Rothsay is doing everything it can to support a first-grader suddenly stricken with cancer.

In a show of tremendous support, the community of Rothsay is doing everything it can to support a first-grader suddenly stricken with cancer. Tonight, hundreds attended a carnival to help set off medical bills that are piling up for the family of Avery Kady.

Avery's journey began just more than a month ago, when he began feeling back-pains after his April 6th birthday party. Doctors soon discovered he had cancer and were forced to remove one of his kidneys. But nothing's keeping this class-clown down as he was all smiles tonight.

Teachers and staff immediately jumped into action to throw this carnival in honor of Avery. Without-a-doubt, tonight's most popular attraction was a five-dollar buzz-cut so fellow students and friends could look just like Avery.

More than 400 shirts have also been sold. The back of each reads "Cancer may have started the fight, but Avery will finish it." Doctors remain positive as Avery is currently undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Leslee Wedll – Avery’s Grandmother: “It was scary, but we were positive from the very beginning. Most of these people I do not know, and here they are, taking time out of their busy day to support Avery.”

Tonight's event raised more than $17,000. If you'd like to help Avery, a donation account has been set up for Avery at any Wells Fargo Bank.
