Sand issues bring extra cost to West Fargo projects

West Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Our weather has been great for road construction, but crews working on Main Avenue in West Fargo have been running into another problem.

    Because the sand is less stable than the clay, rock has to be brought in, which ends up costing the project a little more.

Our weather has been great for road construction, but crews working on Main Avenue in West Fargo have been running into another problem. Deep down under the road are pockets of sand. Through the sand water flows into the construction site as if someone turned on a garden hose. Because the sand is less stable than the clay, rock has to be brought in which ends up costing the project a little more.

Kevin Gorder – ND DOT: “It runs 2.5 to 3 times what it would cost to use just sand bedding. Sand type material in the valley is really easy to find, rocks a little harder to find, so it does drive the price up a little bit more.”

The sand that is pulled out is allowed to dry and then used in other parts of the project.
