Local Entrepreneur trying to make Paddle Boarding Newest Craze in Lakes Country

Detroit Lakes, MN (WDAY TV) - It could be a pricey summer for lake-home owners as gas prices are hovering around $3.60 and expected to rise, but not every water sport needs a motor.

It could be a pricey summer for lake-home owners as gas prices are hovering around $3.60 and expected to rise, but not every water sport needs a motor. A new shop in Detroit Lakes is hoping their gas-free sport is just what our area needs.

It's taken over the West Coast, and it's invaded the cities, now one local entrepreneur is trying to make paddle boarding the newest craze in lakes country.

Ben Magnuson – Owner, SOL Surf Co: “Just wanted to bring something back to the community that gave somebody a different way of getting on the water.”

22-year-old new business owner and Detroit Lakes native, Ben Magnuson, says paddle boarding is all an all-encompassing sport - from aerobic workouts to yoga to fishing.

Ben Magnuson – Owner, SOL Surf Co: “I've taught everyone from a 5-year-old kid to an 84-year-old man so it's a sport that appeals to a huge age gap.”

The MSUM student spent the last few years teaching the sport in Hawaii. He's trademarked his SolSurf brand with a west coast attitude.

Ben Magnuson – Owner, SOL Surf Co: “It stands for stoked on life, it's kind of a Hawaiian word, but it's something that's exciting, it's energy, it's something different for the community.”

And the shop isn't only for paddle boarding. Magnuson hopes his shop becomes a clean hangout for teenagers.

Ben Magnuson – Owner, SOL Surf Co: “We encourage loitering, we want people to come down here, play volleyball, hangout, we're going to have some tunes going, live bands coming in.”

Magnuson expects to be fully open by Tuesday.
