What a wild day in Moorhead, up to 8 deer ended up disoriented and panicked when they wandered into downtown. People say, the deer were smashing into windows, doors, one was even hit by a car.
Josh Schroder – Moorhead Police: “This is one of the most interesting things I have seen since I have been up here and I have been up here for 7 years.”
Police officers never know how their day will turn-out, but it's safe to say Moorhead Police Officer Josh Schroder never could have dreamed what he'd encounter today.
Josh Schroder – Moorhead Police: “I was at the us bank on an unrelated call when a person at the bank had hollered ‘Hey look at that, look at all of those deer.’ Then 6 or 8 deer ran across the US bank parking lot, to the mall.”
It was chaos, Schroder says the deer were running into windows and doors in the mall courtyard and across the street at Scheels. Then one of the disoriented deer came charging his way.
Josh Schroder – Moorhead Police: “They ran full speed, the one that I was, just moving out of the way of this one over here when it hit the bus shelter and it had actually tried to get up so I held that one so it wouldn't get up and run in anything else.”
It ended up being hit by a van and dying.
Another deer that crashed through one of the mall windows also died.
Josh Schroder – Moorhead Police: “There was a couple people in the parking lot of US bank that were basically frozen in time as far as you know, are we really seeing this.”
The deer hit the window with such force a mall worker could even hear the glass shattering from the complete opposite side of the mall.
Jim Honek – Mall Custodian: “I actually had just clocked in, I was going to relieve the gal that opened up this morning, and we were sitting back in the courtyard, and we just heard the glass shatter.”
Moorhead Center Mall Custodian Jim Honek has worked here for 7 years, in that time he has seen just one deer near the mall.
Jim Honek – Mall Custodian: “Uh a little bit of shock, I suppose, not something you see everyday.”
A day that could have been a lot worse, had the animals entered the mall, still a wild story that'll be told at some dinner tables tonight.
The van driver who hit and killed one of the deer, actually took it home and will turn it into a meal. The other one that died is being taken to the Zoo and fed to the wolves.
