Titan of industry shows gratitude to former guidance counselor

What a reunion today in Fargo between a student and high school counselor who made a difference in his life, almost 50 years ago. Bob Hamblet retired from the Fargo School 25 years ago, a long-time counselor and principal. Before that Bob was a guidance counselor in Grand Island, Nebraska, where a 1964 graduate would go on to become one of corporate America's success stories.

Bob Hamblet, of Fargo, and his wife Jean didn't know what to make of today. They were waiting for a corporate jet to pick them up and swoop them off to Grand Island Nebraska.

Bob Hamblet – Former Teacher: “It’s a thrill.”

It was back in the 1960's, before moving to Fargo, that Bob Hamblet was a much loved guidance counselor in Nebraska. It would be in 1964 that he helped a young boy named Lanny Martin get into college. That Lanny Martin would go on to be a CEO and leader around the world in the oil, chemical, and titanium metals industries - a giant. He thanks Bob Hamblet for the kick start.

Today, that Lanny Martin flew in on his corporate jet to pick up Bob and Jean Hamblet. Lanny has set up an impressive scholarship program in honor of Bob.

Lanny Martin – Honoring Bob Hamblet: “I haven't seen Bob in 48 years, but he’s had a lasting impression my entire life and as I got a little bit older and a little bit wiser, I kept thinking that I wanted to do something very special for someone who had a dramatic impact on my life.

It would have been easy for Lanny Martin to enjoy his corporate success and never look back, but here he is today in Fargo, thanking the man he says helped him be successful.

Jean Hamblet – Bob’s Wife: “And for him to even think back about this after this illustrious career is really something.”

Bob Hamblet: “Far above anything I’ve have dreamed of.”

Lanny Martin: “To the kids I want to say remember the counselors. To the counselors I want to say, many of them you will never be able to see you again, but you made lasting impressions on their lives.”

It will be three days of celebration in Grand Island, Nebraska, honoring the success of a Midwest boy, who has never forgotten who helped get to the top.

The full ride scholarship in honor of Bob will be awarded to a student this weekend in Grand Island.
