BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — State wildlife officials are closing North Dakota's paddlefish snagging season to additional harvest on Friday afternoon.
The Game and Fish Department says the move is being made to protect the population of the fish. Fisheries Chief Greg Power says there has been high interest among anglers, and low water levels have concentrated the paddlefish.
The paddlefish season opens May 1 and runs through the month, but Game and Fish can close the season early if it appears more than 1,000 fish will be caught. The season has remained open through May only twice in the past dozen years.
Anglers who have not harvested a paddlefish this year still will be able to snag a fish during a seven-day snag-and-release season that will start Saturday. Any fish caught must be released.
