Bismarck, ND (WDAY TV) -- They gave their lives to protect their communities, and today these North Dakota law enforcement officers were remembered.

A service at the state Capitol paid tribute to the 61 officers whose names are carved on the North Dakota Peace Officers memorial walls.

Officials gave special recognition to Bismarck Police Sergeant Steve Kenner and Burleigh County Sheriff's Deputy Bryan Sleeper.

Both men died in the line of duty last year.

North Dakota Attorney General, Wayne Stenehjem, says, "These officers did not know the terrible price they would be called upon to pay, but we know that it would not have mattered to them even if they had known. They would not have hesitated to do their duty."

Nearly 200 law enforcement officers across the nation were killed in the line of duty last year.
