FARGO – Police say a 24-year-old Fargo man allegedly fled a traffic stop Tuesday night, crashed the Lexus he was driving and then tried to hide in a motel closet.
According to Lt. Joel Vettel, a patrol officer observed the 1999 Lexus driving recklessly at 11:42 p.m. and tried to pull it over in the 3000 block of Ninth Avenue South. The driver initially started to pull over but then fled at a high rate of speed.
Another officer discovered the Lexus in 3800 block of Ninth Avenue South, where the suspect apparently had lost control of the car, striking and knocking down a light pole and severely damaging the car. The suspect had fled on foot.
Witnesses at the Econo Lodge at 1401 35th St. S. helped police locate the driver and a passenger hiding in a closet in the motel, Vettel said.
Joseph Lawrence Olson was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, driving under suspension, reckless driving, fleeing police and leaving the scene of an accident, Vettel said. He was taken to the Cass County Jail.
Court records show Olson is currently on supervised probation after pleading guilty April 4 to breaking into a vehicle, false reports to law enforcement and carrying a concealed weapon, all related to an incident Oct. 10 in Cass County. He was charged May 2 in Grand Forks County with felony drug possession and endangerment of a child.
