The Queens of Colonoscopy are the talk of the town

Lisbon, ND (WDAY TV) -- A group of women from Lisbon, North Dakota is the talk of the town for taking a serious medical issue and turning it into a humorous but positive ad campaign. They are known as the Queens of Colonoscopy. Four women who are providers at the "Family Medical Clinic" in Lisbon.

Lisbon, ND (WDAY TV) -- A group of women from Lisbon, North Dakota is the talk of the town for taking a serious medical issue and turning it into a humorous but positive ad campaign. They are known as the Queens of Colonoscopy. Four women who are providers at the "Family Medical Clinic" in Lisbon.

It's no wonder Dr. Barbara Sheets and her team of phys assistants and nurse practitioners are popular with patients.

It is such an important test and it has been hard to get people to talk about it, much less do it.

They live next to and see their patients daily in this small town, plus they have a knack for educating patients...but doing it in a unique day.

This is a new Blue Cross Blue Shield ad for its MediQHome program. It features the four providers from the Family Medical Clinic in Lisbon who use the software, which streamlines data and alerts these providers when its time for a patient to go in for a colonoscopy, a potentially life saving test.

The print and TV ads are a hit and even have the children of the celebrities asking questions.

Meredith Kelson - Queen of Colonoscopy: "My 6 year old said, 'I was at lunch and my friend's mom said she had seen you on tv, what is a colonoscopy, mom?'"

And imagine the talk on Lisbon's main street, the cafes and businesses, the colonoscopy queens have reached celebrity status.

Stacey Spilovoy: "Some patients with stats and facts and some patients with consequences and some with humor, I was in the grocery store and that is where we see all our patients in a small town, one lady asked if we should bow and she said it could be risky."

Kate Tanner - Queen of Colonoscopy: "It used to be breast cancer--tough to talk about...a personal issue, this commercial might do the same thing for colon cancer."

The number of North Dakotans getting colonosopies is nothing to brag about, and so it is hoped a little levity, will crack the shell on the taboo test and not only get people talking, but into the clinic, to set up the test.
