Moorhead exploring solutions to traffic issuesMoorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - Two major highways may be changing the way they snake through downtown Moorhead. It's all part of ideas the city is looking at to move traffic through downtown and across railroad tracks more efficiently.
Two major highways may be changing the way they snake through downtown Moorhead. It's all part of ideas the city is looking at to move traffic through downtown and across railroad tracks more efficiently.
Spend a little time at the Dairy Queen on the corner of 8th and Main in Moorhead and the traffic issues at the intersection are easy to see.
Troy Deleon – Owner, Moorhead Dairy Queen: “It gets a little crazy and then it just backs up from the trains and then they'll sit out there at an angle and block the other street here.”
Some of the trucks making the turn to follow highway 10 east over the tracks have had some close calls.
Troy Deleon: “They'll hit our side of the building or the stop light here or come awful close to hitting the stop light from the west.”
That's just one of the reason Moorhead is looking at moving where highway 10 and 75 cross the tracks from 8th street east to 11th street. Moving highway 10 and 75 up to 11th street may not only improve traffic flow, it may have financial implications if any underpass is ever built on 11th street.
Wade Kline – FM Metrocog: “If we could move the 10 designation over to 11th Street then you put 11th street on a MNDOT road so then as an underpass would be designed there and you look at the cost estimates it would make MNDOT a funding partner.”
Extending the one ways on 14th and 11th street to Main or 1st avenue north is another idea but this combined with the US 10 and 75 move would require the MN DOT to take on extra highway and may be more difficult to do.
Public input meetings on the road change are planned for later this month and June.
