US Geological Survey Studying River Flooding

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Beginning this week, the U.S. Geological Survey and other state and local agencies will begin studying how flooding last year has changed the Missouri River.

The Bismarck Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/IQUAiB) that the U.S. Geological Survey will be a geomorphic study. Geomorphology is the study of land forms and the processes that shape them.

Kelly Casteel with the State Water Commission said the study will consist of two main components: a conceptual model and a numerical model that will be data intensive.

Casteel says one of the goals of the study is to determine the sediment cycle of the Missouri River since the Garrison Dam was built.

The study is estimated to cost nearly $1.1 million.
