Thursday Apps of the Weeks: Educational Games

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Portable videogames, smartphones and tablets have no doubt made those long car rides with children a little more bearable, but it doesn't have to be junk they're looking at.

Portable videogames, smartphones and tablets have no doubt made those long car rides with children a little more bearable, but it doesn't have to be junk they're looking at. In our weekly App series, WDAY 6 reporter Bill Schammert takes a look at how you can turn your smartphone into an educational tool.

I don't know if I'll ever beat this game. Let's be honest there's not a whole lot of educational value to Angry Birds, but there are plenty of apps out there that will not only keep your child entertained, but learning too.

On Rocket Math you earn points by solving everything from multiplication problems to reading time. Making a bigger, better rocket as your math skills sharpen.

With Sight Words, you can customize your own spelling list, add and subtract words as you go.

For the astronomer-to-be, there's the app 8 Planets - remember there are only 8 now. It helps with everything from spelling to the location in our solar system.

Most importantly, all these apps are the best price of all...free. For a link to more fun, educational apps for your children, follow the easy link.

Next week, find out how your smart-phone can become a guide to the stars.
