18 dogs have been rescued by the Pennington County Humane Society from Roseau County.

Dawn Williamson from the Humane Society says they were called Friday by Roseau County to assist with the surrender of 18 small purebred dogs.

They include nine Dachshunds and five Shih tzus.

Williamson says the dogs were in a warm area but were neglected.

"The dogs themselves were very overgrown, covered with feces, smelly, matted to the skin," Williamson said. "A Roseau County breeder was in over her head and voluntarily gave up these animals to comply with some restrictions that have been placed on her by the state of Minnesota."

Williamson says they now have enough food but need volunteers and cash donations to help care for the dogs.

All of the dogs are up for adoption. If anyone is interested in adoption of the dogs, the Pennington County Humane Society can be contacted at (218) 681-8045.

The Roseau County Sheriff's Office says the case is under investigation.
