Rural Williston School District Drops Merger Plans

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — A group of three rural schools has ended discussions about merging with Williston's city school district.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — A group of three rural schools has ended discussions about merging with Williston's city school district.

The three schools make up the District 8 New Public Schools.

Their enrollment has risen this year from 180 to 225 students. District Superintendent Greg McNary says he's expecting 350 students this fall.

McNary says the merger talks have been put aside so the district can focus on managing its growth.

McNary tells the Williston Herald that a Thursday meeting with Williston city school officials to discuss a possible merger has been canceled.

District 8 has one school with students in grades seven and eight and two other schools that teach kindergarten through sixth grade.
