Stephen, MN (WDAY TV) -- A child is dead after a fire near the small town of Stephen, Minnesota. It happened about 3 miles north of there.
The town of Stephen, Minnesota woke up to some heart breaking news this morning. A late friday night fire has left one child dead, and another badly burned. Some say this is the worst tragedy to ever hit this town.
Nolan Dokken - Stephen Resident: "Last night I actually heard the sirens start going off and they took off and I heard just tons and tons of emergency vehicles."
Kathy Wright - Knows the Family: "I guess it's hard to put into words, it's just tragic and sad that something like this happens."
Law enforcement is waiting to release the names, but in a town this size it doesn't take long for everyone to know who the victim is.
Wright: "I knew the boys from school, because I work at the school."
Firefighters and police officers were still at the home at 3 this afternoon trying to piece together what actually happened. Details are still unknown but folks in Stephen will do whatever they can to help.
Wright: "In small communities, they always come together and we'll help out as best we can and show support."
The town of less than 7-hundred is in disbelief that such a horrific incident happened. Residents say it's the worst thing to ever hit home.
Wright: "There's been fires but not to this extent."
Dokken: "It's kind of one of those things that's hard to talk about, I mean a lot of people knew him."
For now, Stephen residents are grieving a big loss.
Wright: "It was just sad, it's really sad."
