The NDSU defense has a tough act to follow this season after playoff performance for the ages. They're confident a repeat is do-able thanks to the return of cornerback Brendin Pierre.
Brendin Pierre – NDSU Junior Cornerback: “The day right before we started our first practice, at the end of our breakdown I said, “I'm back!” I was just happy to be back, it’s been a long time.”
It has been a long time for Brendin Pierre. Sixteen months to be exact. Pierre had to sit out last year, he was ruled academically ineligible right before fall practice began.
Brendin Pierre: “Really frustrated at myself. I couldn't get mad at the coaches, because the coaches did nothing but tried to help me the entire time. I was just really disappointed in myself, so I put it on myself, put it on my shoulders that I’m going to get better. Get back in school, get my academics right. I don’t want to get kicked off the team, don't want to go back home. There’s nothing for me back home, so I was going to do anything I possibly can to get back on the team. I had to shoot for the stars, just go all out with it.”
Pierre did work his way back. He got his grades back in order, he even dressed for the national championship game. He didn't play but the desire to return couldn’t have been bigger.
Chris Klieman – NDSU Defensive Coordinator: “To see your friends and peers go through the season we did and not be on the field – I know that had to be difficult. But I know it made him hungry. I know it made him excited about getting back on the field come spring.”
Pierre has returned this spring, and is now opposite perhaps the best corner in FCS Marcus Williams. The combination is enough to scare many FCS QBs.
Brendin Pierre: “We have unbelievable potential in the secondary. Adding myself back into it, I’m just grateful to be back in there. I’m just good to get back in the mix.”
Chris Klieman: “Marcus will be better because of Brendin Pierre out there as well. I think the two of them complement each other so well. We’re looking for big things out of B and I know B is excited about being back and expecting big things from himself.”
The Bison love having Pierre's presence back on the field, but not nearly as much as number two, happy to wearing the green and gold once again.
Brendin Pierre: “It feels great. It feels great just to be back with my teammates, my friends, everybody. Just to get back acquainted with the team, I’m blessed.”
The NDSU spring game is set for a 1pm kickoff Saturday.
