Wednesday, April 18th update from Kevin: Sounds like there is good news for Bear the Dog. The University of Minnesota is likely doing surgery. To help, click here to donate.
A dog that's up for adoption at the Humane Society of Otter Tail County is capturing the hearts of volunteers who spotted the quiet German Shepherd Cross in a kennel there. A Facebook campaign is underway to help Bear get the veterinary and surgical care for an injured, crooked foot.
Jerry Mortenson stumbled upon Bear over the weekend. Immediately the one year old shepherd cross, friendly and likeable, sucked him in.
Jerry Mortenson – Fergus Falls: “I mean, he’s just in love with life, you know?”
But it is obvious Bear has a problem. A deformed foot, possibly broken once then healed, is preventing Bear from walking or running normally.
Jerry Mortenson: “Geez, you just think, he can't run with the other dogs.”
So volunteers are hoping surgery will help Bear run again.
Jerry Mortenson: “If they have to pin it or they might have to re-break it, and then pin it, but hopefully get the leg straightened out.”
It is actually Facebook that could help Bear get the surgery and help volunteers pay for it.
Jerry Mortenson: “I am positive there will be overwhelming response.”
A meeting tomorrow with a local vet could determine Bear's future. Volunteers who have Bear's back are hoping surgery will not only get him back running again, but prompt someone wanting a shelter dog, to consider Bear.
