Former North Dakota Governor Ed Schafer is speaking out against a proposal that would eliminate property taxes in the state. Schafer visited with Jay Thomas for nearly an hour to debate Measure 2 this afternoon on 970 WDAY-AM.

The governor primarily expressed his concerns over what would happen to the education system, and how losing local control could affect the state. Governor Schafer does believe if the measure passes it doesn't necessarily mean the state would need to raise taxes elsewhere.

Ed Schafer – Former ND Governor: “Priorities are education, health and safety of our citizens. We can fully fund those with the money we have available today, this will not cause tax increases unless the legislature so chooses.”

North Dakotans will vote on the measure on the June 12th ballot.
