Heroin-related deaths increase in Hennepin County

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Hennepin County authorities say the number of heroin-related deaths increased dramatically in 2011.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Hennepin County authorities say the number of heroin-related deaths increased dramatically in 2011.

Officials say there were 21 heroin-related deaths in the county last year. That's more than double the eight deaths the Hennepin County Medical Examiner saw in 2010.

Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek, Ramsey County Sheriff Matt Bostrom, and Anoka County Sheriff James Stuart plan to release more details Thursday about what they call "disturbing" trends in heroin use in the metro area.

A January update on drug abuse trends says abuse of heroin and other opiates reached record-high levels in the Twin Cities in 2011. The Department of Human Services report says heroin accounted for 10 percent of admissions to addiction treatment programs in the first half of 2011, up from 3.3 percent in 2000.
