A Minnesota lawmaker is urging a change in legislation to help homeowners get much needed property tax relief. Dilworth Representative Paul Marquart met with community members in Moorhead. He wants the homestead credit restored. That up to $304 credit was taken away last year after four decades.
Marquart says it raised property taxes by $260 million, 64% of that in rural Minnesota. Rural homeowners are paying eight times more than those in Minneapolis - St. Paul. Farm taxes went up 12%.
State Representative Paul Marquart – (D) Dilworth: “That has placed a very unfair burden on senior citizens on fixed incomes, middle class families, small businesses, and farmers. We need to provide some property tax relief.”
Property taxes have doubled in the last decade in rural Minnesota. They've gone up 150% for farmers.
