Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- After going through two weeks of spring drills, the Bison football team finally held it's first live scrimmage. Giving several young players a chance to prove themselves in a game-like situation.
Craig Bohl was anxious to get a first look at his team that has a ton of expectations coming off it's national championship.
And it's the Bison defense living up to those expectations, first play from scrimmage, Brock Jensen's pass is picked off over the middle by new middle linebacker Grant Olson.
More defense later in the scrimmage. Esley Thorton in at Qb, watch defensive lineman Brian Schaetz just blow up the middle for the huge sack!!
Chris Klieman's group would not relent. Bison secondary has a chance to be one of the best in FCS this season.
The offense finally does something near the end of the scrimmage. Redshirt freshman Matt Jones go to work. Able to go side to side, he goes in from 35 yards out. The only touchdown of the day for the offense, but the head coach was pleased.
Craig Bohl, NDSU Head Coach, says, "Was particulary pleased with the defensive front, and any time you can score on defense is positive thought our offense responded well, not having jumps offside, execution was good."
NDSU Redshirt Freshman RB, Matt Jones, says, "Today was awesome, last year was great, winning the national championship, but now feeling like a part of the team, trying to do it again, it's been a great time."
Two injury updates, redshirt freshman QB Carson Wentz suffered what Bohl called a high ankle sprain, he may miss the rest of the spring. Starting Runningback Sam Ojuri sat out with concussion symptoms..
