MINOT, N.D. (AP) — The city of Minot is sending out offers to buy 108 homes as part of flood control efforts.
Officials say the notices will go out over the next few days. The buyouts are voluntary, and involve properties the city wants to buy regardless of any decisions on a permanent flood protection plan. They'll be funded in part through $23.7 million being made available by the state Water Commission.
Officials say additional properties might be identified for buyouts later. The homes identified now would provide flood mitigation and open space for emergency flood protection.
Historic Souris River flooding last summer swamped thousands of Minot homes and forced thousands of residents in the state's fourth-largest city to evacuate.
