Pleasant Township to vote on leaving Cass County

Pleasant Township, ND (WDAY TV) - Voters will decide if people in a small part of Cass County will be able to leave Cass and become part of Richland County. Many people in Pleasant Township say they're ready for a change in leadership.

Voters will decide if people in a small part of Cass County will be able to leave Cass and become part of Richland County. Many people in Pleasant Township say they're ready for a change in leadership.

Pleasant Township sits in the corner of southeast Cass County. People here have gathered 267 signatures to say they want out.

Daniel Rugroden – Pleasant Township: "Instead of talking, we decided to take action."

Daniel Rugroden lives in Pleasant Township. He says Cass County leadership hears their concerns, but doesn't listen.

Daniel Rugroden: "A lot of people in pleasant Township feel Cass County is not representing our best interest."

Cass County leaders disagree.

Keith Berndt – Cass County Administrator:: "That's not true. We do care, we are trying."

Rugroden says one of the township's biggest concerns, a proposed Red River Diversion, would flood these quiet neighborhoods.

Daniel Rugroden: "A proposed dam would be just north of us here and it would result in the whole area we are standing in being under water."

It's now up to Richland and Cass County voters to decide who will lead this township. People in Richland County will vote in June, and Cass County will vote in November.
