Bismarck, ND (WDAY TV) -- The third time is the charm for Brian Kalk. Kalk wins the republican endorsement for U.S. House after two close ballots.

Delegates endorsed Kalk over Shane Goettle in the third ballot by a vote of 929 to 676. Kalk needed 859 to win. Five candidates competed for the endorsement.

After the second vote, it turned into a two man race, who were within a 100 votes of each other. There were tense moments as Kalk waited each outcome.

Kalk says, "I was very anxious because I had not idea what the actual strength of the numbers were, and after the first ballot came through we were ahead by about fifteen votes I felt pretty good."

Kalk will run against Republican Kevin Cramer in June.
