A half-billion dollars - that's how much money you could have in the bank instantly. All you have to do is win the lottery. The multistate game Mega Millions is up to $500 million. Is there anything you can do to improve your chances of winning?

The tickets keep popping out of the machine at this Stop-N-Go in North Fargo.

Terrance Sanders – Stop-N-Go Clerk: "By the hundreds they're coming in. $476 million is quite the incentive to get people in here."

That $476 million jackpot jumped to $500 million in the short time we were there.

Stacey Iverson – Mega Millions Player: "My heart races every time they run them through to see if they're a winner."

Whether I do a quick pick or pick my own lucky numbers, the chances of me winning are about 1 in about 176 million. That's not stopping thousands of customers from across the country from trying their luck.

Rachel: "What would you do if you won?

Jan Lofberg – Mega Millions Player: I'd take care of my mom and dad and then I'd go on a big trip."

Stacey Iverson: “Probably do some traveling. Quit my job.”

Betty Werner – Mega Millions Player: "I think just to pay my bills and maybe help my kids to clean their slate."

Dr. John Reber – Concordia College Assistant Math Professor: “I think buy in large it has an entertainment value so it's no different from going to a movie or going for a night out, you pay a little money and you get the chance to dream 'what if I won 500 million dollars?'"

Dr. Reber, an assistant math professor at Concordia College, says those dreams will likely never become reality. He says playing often improves your luck, but not by much.

Dr. John Reber: "If you played once per drawing, so you buy a $1 ticket per drawing, it would take you about 1.7 million years to win once on average, which isn't great."

Even so, Betty Werner is trying he her luck with 20 tickets.

Betty Werner: “What if, you're dreaming. It's your hopes.”

Hoping one of those tickets will hold the magic numbers.

The Mega Millions Jackpot is the largest in US History.
