FARGO - Authorities here are responding to a collision in which a pedestrian was struck by a train at Main Avenue and Broadway.
A dispatcher said the call for the pedestrian being struck was received at 1:30 p.m.
Fargo Police Sgt. Kevin Pallas said the victim, an approximately 60-year-old man from the Fargo-Moorhead area, was struck after he walked past the crossing arms and into the path of the train, which was traveling roughly 20 miles per hour.
Pallas said the man fell to the side of the tracks after being hit, and was not run over by the train.
The man is currently being treated a local emergency room, and the severity of his injury is not known.
Pallas declined to speculate on why the man walked past the crossing arms and in front of the train.
"At this time it's hard to determine what's going on," he said. "We'll continue to investigate this and hopefully interview this gentleman that was struck to find out exactly what may have transpired or led up to this."
Witnesses told police that the crossing arms were working and were in the proper position at the time of the incident, Pallas said.
