MATBus looking to buy new busses

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- The spike in bus riders in the metro is leading to a negative impact. Buses are being used years longer than they should.

Four buses are from 1997. Each has more than half a million miles. Matbus wants to replace the buses with 40 foot hybrids that are five feet longer to fit overcrowding.

Each hybrid costs 600 thousand dollars. The agency is applying for federal transit grants to cover the federal share of 83 percent. The local share is about 100 thousand dollars.

Jim Gilmour, the Fargo Planning Director, says, "it really relies on the grants. If we don't get the grants, we'll have to apply again next year and kind of hopefully you know, nurse these buses along for a couple more years."

Matbus wants five new hybrids. It has already grant funds for three to buy this year.
