BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Former North Dakota U.S. Sen. Byron Dorgan is a co-author of a new 'eco-thriller' novel that details a fictional attempt to sabotage alternative energy development.

The book is called "Blowout." Dorgan wrote it with author David Hagberg, who has published more than 70 suspense novels. Hagberg's most recent work, "Abyss," is about a project to harness ocean currents to generate electricity.

"Blowout" is about a secret research lab near Medora called the Dakota District Initiative. It's an experiment to produce cheap methane gas by injecting bacteria into coal seams.

In the book, a hedge fund investor with extensive oil holdings hires an eco-terrorist to blow up the lab.

"Blowout" is being published Tuesday. It is Dorgan's first novel. He has written two previous nonfiction books about trade and financial deregulation.
