DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Highway Patrol is expanding an initiative to increase safety for school buses.

The patrol is implementing its Trooper on a Bus program in the northeastern part of the state this week. It involves troopers who ride on buses to observe motorists violating traffic laws and radio that information to troopers in nearby squad cars.

The program already is in use in western North Dakota's oil patch, where buses operate in the midst of heavy industrial traffic.
