Lake associations sue over zebra mussels

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Three lake associations in Carver County have filed a lawsuit against the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources commissioner over the spread of zebra mussels.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Three lake associations in Carver County have filed a lawsuit against the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources commissioner over the spread of zebra mussels.

The lawsuit alleges that DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr has failed to establish an effective program to prevent the introduction of zebra mussels into Lake Bavaria, Christmas Lake and Lotus Lake. The plaintiffs want every boat using the lakes to be inspected at Lake Minnewashta Regional Park.

DNR spokesman Chris Niskanen says the agency doesn't have the statutory authority to inspect boats at an off-lake location. Niskanen says the DNR will continue to inspect watercraft at boat launches and has hired 150 inspectors that will be deployed to high traffic lakes this season.

Zebra mussels have already infested around 60 Minnesota lakes and several rivers and streams.
