NEW ENGLAND, N.D. (AP) — Officials say an elderly man is without a home after a grass and field fire destroyed his house.

New England Fire Chief Joe Kathrein tells the Dickinson Press (http://bit.ly/GBzd6E) that the fire sparked when burnt brush reignited in a field Monday. It spread about 5,000 acres, and firefighters were out until 9 p.m. dousing the flames.

The fire displaced Arnold Simon, who lived on a farm six miles north of New England. His nephew Kyle Koppinger says Simon chose to sleep in his car Monday night.

One man was treated for burns at St. Joseph's Hospital in Dickinson.

Hettinger County Emergency Manager Ilene Hardmeyer says low visibility from billowing smoke also caused a vehicle accident.
