Almost a month ago MSU Moorhead pulled the plug on its pursuit of Division One hockey. Its athletic program rebounded this afternoon as the university announced a $2 million gift from Sanford for Dragon scholarships; an investment that could see immediate dividends.
The Dragons have fought an uphill battle in athletic funding in the ultra-competitive Northern Sun Conference. According to 2010 statistics, MSUM's athletic budget was $3.3 million, 27% below the $4.8 million average of the Northern Sun. The biggest difference has been in football, where the conference allows for 28 scholarships. MSUM has been sitting at 9 for years.
Krabbenhoft did admit this afternoon, that he had committed $10 million towards the Dragons pursuit of hockey.
