There was a dramatic increase in armed robberies and stolen cars in Moorhead in 2011. The city is releasing its crime numbers, but it’s not all bad. The number of most reported crimes is lower than recent years.

Some types of crime were on the rise. There were 13 robberies in 2011, up 5 from 2010. Plus, there were 14 more vehicles stolen. But Moorhead police say it's nothing to worry about."

David Ebinger – Moorhead Police Chief: "Although we try and look at these, analyze, and determine if there is something we can address, once in a while, when there are low figures, you are going to have those dramatic increases and decreases."

Police Chief David Ebinger says serious offenses like aggravated assault, larceny, and rapes are down 13% because programs are in place.

David Ebinger: "We've been very lucky with the Tri-College efforts, Click-It-Or Ticket, the other enforcement actions."

As for the areas on the rise: Of those 13 robberies, only 40% are cleared, and only two percent of the 40 stolen car cases are solved.

David Ebinger: "We generally have a higher rate of clearance on that. You are looking at if they are taken out of town or chopped."

Police say on average, those challenging cases usually take longer to solve. There were no murders last year, compared to two in 2010.
