New Wilkin County floodplain maps coming

WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) — New floodplain maps in Wilkin County will likely necessitate flood insurance for more residents.

WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) — New floodplain maps in Wilkin County will likely necessitate flood insurance for more residents.

The Wahpeton Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/yfKKem) that the FEMA proposed changes will go into effect either later this year or in 2013.

Areas added into the flood plain include Wolverton, Foxhome and Campbell, Minn.

Mortgage companies will likely mandate homeowners to buy flood insurance for properties located in the new flood plain areas. Nationally, the average flood claim has amounted to nearly $48,000 in the past 10 years.

Wilkin County emergency management director Breanna Koval says it will be much cheaper for homeowners to buy flood insurance now rather than buy it after the maps go into effect.
