As gas prices continue to climb, more and more people are taking advantage of public transportation. MATBus is shattering records in some of the 25 fixed routes in the metro. Both downtown and West Acres areas are seeing a spike in riders, up 20% from this time last year. This comes on the heels of a modern day record in 2011, with nearly 2.1 million rides.
Jim Gilmour – Fargo Planning Director: “The cost to fill up your car once, you can ride transit all month for the cost of a monthly pass so I think that a lot of people are looking at using transit rather than having a second car or just using it for a majority of their trips.”
Ridership is down near campus with the warmer weather because more students are walking.
