The USDA is giving schools a new option in ground beef after worries over pink slime. This new option doesn't contain the pink slime, but it will have a higher fat content.
The West Fargo Schools Food Service Director says she never knew about pink slime until recently. The West Fargo school district buys its beef from the USDA, but purchases its hamburger patties from Tyson. Those don't contain pink slime.
The schools order is complete for this year, but there will be some changes next year.
Jan Sliper – Food Service Director, West Fargo Schools: “If USDA has other beef available next year when our commodity orders are back in place doing that, I would definitely order the beef without the lean, finely textured beef.”
Fargo Public Schools also purchases its ground beef from the USDA. Moorhead Schools buys its product from two private companies that don't use pink slime.
