Minnesota State Patrol to be out in force on St. Patrick's Day

Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - St. Patrick's Day is this weekend and more law enforcement will be on the roads in Minnesota. Officers say they've seen an increase of in the number of people drinking and driving on St. Patrick's Day, especially when it falls on a weekend.

St. Patrick's Day is this weekend and more law enforcement will be on the roads in Minnesota. Officers say they've seen an increase of in the number of people drinking and driving on St. Patrick's Day, especially when it falls on a weekend.

The last time the holiday was on a weekend was in 2007. More than 500 people were arrested for DWI, and 3 traffic deaths were alcohol related. Usually in a two-day period in Minnesota 170 people are arrested for DWI's.

Michael Hanson – MN State Patrol: “New Year's Eve, everybody plans ahead and it's really become kinds of a boring night for law enforcement. But Superbowl Sunday and St. Patrick's Day have gone the other direction. Those are days we've seen a substantial increase in the number of alcohol-related problems that we see on the road.”

Over the past three years on St. Patrick's Day, there more than 600 drivers arrested for DWI in Minnesota.
