It is the perfect recipe for a spring melt; warm temperatures, little snow, and rivers opening up.
After a historically warm winter it appears the week ahead has good fortune in store, as we approach St. Patrick's Day weekend, Friday has a little luck of the Irish, a possible record breaker temps flirting with the 70's.
As the rain fell today, what little snow was left melted. With temps above freezing overnight, it didn't stand a chance. The Red, solid just days ago, already has started breaking up. The melt is on.
Daryl Ritchison – StormTRACKER Meteorologist: “The spring river rises should start this week channels and cooley so you will notice rivers going up ditches very likely open up this week as well.”
While we have been hearing so much about dry field conditions, NDSU Soil Scientists say it won't take much to replenish topsoil moisture. Despite a warm winter, it was still cold, and so with little snow cover...
David Franze – NDSU Soil Sciences: “Despite modest temps the frost was a lot deeper, after this the top foot or foot and a half will be pretty moist.”
Once the rain moves on out of here, expect the week to get better by the day, culminating with a fantastic Friday and summer like day in spring.
River level forecasts are expected early next week.
