Records: Berg spent $190K on 'campaign' mailings

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — New U.S. House records show Congressman Rick Berg spent almost $190,000 on office mailings to North Dakotans late last year.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — New U.S. House records show Congressman Rick Berg spent almost $190,000 on office mailings to North Dakotans late last year.

The mailings drew criticism from North Dakota Democrats and one of Berg's Republican rivals. They said the mailings represented campaigning at taxpayer expense. Berg is running for the Senate this year.

Berg argued the mailings had useful information about Social Security, Medicare and the economy.

The House expense report covers last October through December when Berg's mailings were sent.

The $190,000 represents 15 percent of Berg's $1.2 million in office expenses for all of last year.

The director of the North Dakota Taxpayers Association says Berg should repay the cost of the mailings from his campaign funds. A Berg spokeswoman says no repayment is planned.
