A new recommendation report shows the total cost of long term flood protection across the entire Red River Basin drastically rising. Faces dropped and sighs could be heard from the Diversion Authority after hearing the cost could reach $4.64 billion. Much of that is for retention.
The cost includes 1.5 million acres of storage in the basin, the diversion, and smaller projects in the works or being talked about for the future in all flood prone areas. Larger communities would be protected to a 500 year flood, smaller ones a 200 year flood.
Lance Yohe – Red River Basin Commission: “All the money that they put out there for retention through water boards that starts to increase that to that 200 level so they need to see it as a do something now, get it to this level, which is more than you've done in the past and keep building to something higher.”
Lawmakers had asked for the 50 year plan.
